OSDP significantly improves security by enabling continuous monitoring that would identify failed, missing, malfunctioning or tampered readers. It also supports AES-128 encryption, preventing hackers from intercepting data transfers or spoofing a card read, a capability required in U.S. Federal Government applications. The OSDP protocol also delivers advanced functionality, improved ease of use and greater interoperability, including the support for smart card technologies, advanced user interfaces, and the remote configuration and upgrade of readers.
