Telesat, one of the world’s largest and most innovative satellite operators, and Intellian, a pioneering provider of feature-rich, future-proof satellite communications solutions, announced a contract award for Intellian to design and supply reference enterprise user terminals for the Telesat Lightspeed Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network. Intellian’s innovative satellite terminal technology leverages the company’s non-geostationary satellite orbit (NGSO) modem integration expertise and satellite tracking algorithms and will provide Telesat’s most demanding customers with highly reliable, high throughput access to the Telesat Lightspeed network. Development and performance testing Telesat will use early deliveries of Intellian terminals to support system development and performance testing, and during the Telesat Lightspeed Alpha and Beta Test phases, to demonstrate system capabilities to Telesat’s enterprise, telecom and government customers, including the Government of Canada. Telesat and Intellian are also discussing terminal development programs for other market segments. These high-performance user terminals feature dual-parabolic antennas in a true make-before-break configuration to achieve seamless handovers from one satellite to the next in the LEO constellation. The Intellian GMDSS terminals will also support SSAS and LRIT, as well as the full range of Iridium Certus® standard services, including voice and broadband data. GMDSS safety terminal Iridium GMDSS distress alerts are automatically routed to a Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) based on the location of the vessel. Alternatively, a user may pre-select an RCC of their choice. Nearby vessels can also be alerted and called directly, enabling them to potentially offer faster assistance to those in distress. Planned for Q4 2024, the GMDSS safety terminal will utilise the Iridium network, which is supported by a unique constellation of 66 cross-linked L-band satellites in the Low Earth Orbit. This network provides reliable coverage around the globe, including the entire Arctic and Antarctic areas, which only Iridium GMDSS serves. Intellian Technologies Inc., a pioneering global provider of resilient multi-constellation satellite user terminals and communications solutions, has announced the opening of its new GMDSS Development Centre in Busan, South Korea.  This centre is dedicated to advancing Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) solutions, including the development of GMDSS VHF and MF/HF radio systems and NAVTEX, with the first products expected to launch in 2025. GMDSS Safety Display Terminals Building on the development of the GMDSS Safety Display Terminals announced last year for Inmarsat and Iridium, Intellian’s expansion into GMDSS radio solutions demonstrates a significant commitment to enhancing maritime safety. The GMDSS, overseen by the United Nations' International Maritime Organisation (IMO) under the Safety Of Life At Sea (SOLAS) convention, is a critical regulatory framework designed to protect the 1.9 million seafarers worldwide. It mandates essential global maritime safety requirements, including radio and satellite communications, for vessels over 300 gross tons and passenger ships carrying more than twelve passengers on international voyages.
